We were at my in-laws for Christmas several years ago, and my sister-in-law served these amazing little ham and cheese buns for lunch. They were delicious, and I of course asked for the recipe. I’ve played around with that simple recipe for a long time, making a bunch of different combinations.
This sliders are extra simple because you’re simply working in layers, not juggling a bunch of mini-buns. And, it all starts with cheapo pack of brown & serve rolls…you know the kind….the ones that are all attached, you slide into the oven and in minutes you have beautifully toasty brown nuggets of goodness. You can choose whether you use those Hawaiian ones, which are a bit sweeter dough, or just the plain old brown and serves. I go with whatever’s cheapest…cuz I roll gourmet that way!
I’ll start you off with my favorites, then if you scroll down further, you can see all the combinations I’ve done. Pretty much the sky is the limit with these. Just follow your sandwich-loving heart’s desire.
Super Simple Sliders – Cubans & Reubens
9×13 baking dish
NOTE: you can do a full pan of one or the other, or a half pan, 6 rolls of each.
1 package brown & serve dinner rolls (12 rolls)
1 T butter melted
Cubans
6 slices, good deli ham
3-5 slices, Swiss cheese
Dill pickle coin slices
3 T dijon mustard
½ stick butter, melted
2 T dried minced onion
Reubens
6 slices good deli pastrami
3-5 slices Swiss cheese
1 C sauerkraut, drained
½ C thousand island salad dressing
3 T whole grain mustard
½ stick butter, melted
2 T dried minced onion
Directions
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Melt 1 T of butter, and brush on bottom and sides of 9×13 baking dish. Slice brown & serve rolls in half horizontally, keeping the individual rolls attached to each other as a sheet. Place bottom half of rolls in baking dish.
Cubans
Evenly layer ham, pickle coins and Swiss cheese on top of the rolls in the baking dish.
Reubens
Evenly layer pastrami, thousand island dressing, sauerkraut, and Swiss cheese on top of the rolls in the baking dish.
Place remaining half of rolls on top, pressing down gently. Melt butter, and add minced onion and mustard. Mix well. Pour over the top of the rolls, ensuring all rolls receive butter/mustard/minced onion mixture. Cover pan tightly with foil, and bake 350* for 15 minutes. Remove the foil, and bake another 10 minutes, until tops of buns are toasted. Remove from oven and let sit for 5 minutes before removing from pan to a serving platter.
