I just love cooking with seasoning blends. First, and most obvious, it’s so simple to just dump a tablespoon or two into whatever you’re making. No hauling out a ton of herb or spice jars and measuring each and every one out. What a pain in the patoot!
I used to buy spice blends at the grocery, or from various home parties. But they all come with so much “stuff” I can’t pronounce…preservatives and anti-clumping agents that I’m sure in the right quantity would turn you into a human salt-lick (for you city kids, that’s what animals lick to get their salts and mineral supplements for their diet).
On a rare occasion I will buy a blend from a home-based business, like I did recently at a craft show, mainly to support the small business. In fact, I just picked up some delicious dip mixes. They’re awesome! But as I look at the ingredient list, they’re way too tedious, and certainly not worth the raw ingredient cost, for me to put together. Sure hope I grabbed their business cards for a restock!
Anyway, there are certain blends I use a lot that I always have in my pantry, and Greek Seasoning is one of them. I have small 8-ounce jelly jars I keep on hand for just this purpose. They’re the perfect size so I don’t make too much at one time. And, they’re great for making up batches and giving as gifts. I do not add any anti-clumping (like cornstarch) or any salt. I prefer to add those separately, as needed and per the dishes I’m making. I just make a habit that every time I go into my pantry, I give my home-made blend jars a little shake. I’ve yet to have one clump!
