The fastest and easiest way to get to a delicious pizza is by using Naan. Naan is a Middle Eastern flatbread that’s readily available in just about all grocery stores now. Naan itself doesn’t have a lot of flavor, in my opinion, but it takes really easily to just about any flavor you apply to it. I love to grill it, either on my gas grill outdoors, or in my cast iron grill pan on the stovetop.
I’ve started keeping Naan on hand pretty much all the time because I can cook up something pretty quickly with it if friends come knocking. I also always have my multi-purpose red sauce in my freezer and fresh mozzarella in the fridge. With any luck, I have fresh basil either in the garden or in the fridge, so…I can quickly knock out a Naan Margherita Pizza in no time.
Yet again, one of those stupid simple recipes that can be changed up quickly if you have basic ingredients handy in your fridge or pantry. If you’re one to keep Asian ingredients in your pantry, you could whip up a hummus or Thai peanut sauce for a topping, add chicken, olives, artichoke hearts…and VOILA! I challenge you right now to head to your pantry and fridge and see what you could whip up, if you only had Naan flatbread handy…go on…do it right now, and let me know in comments below how you do!
Naan Grilled Margherita Pizza
Ingredients
- 1-2 Naan flatbreads
- 1 C red sauce or pizza sauce
- 4-5 slices fresh mozzarella
- ¼ C fresh basil chiffonade cut
- Olive oil
Instructions
- Heat grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Brush both sides of Naan with olive oil, spread with a thin layer of red sauce. Top with ripped slices of fresh mozzarella, and sprinkle with fresh basil. Slide Naan onto grill and cook until mozzarella is melted (8-10 minutes).
If your Naan seems to be getting too dark, just move it around a bit on your grill/in your pan. It’ll be o.k.! What’s really great is you can do ANY toppings you like and you don’t have to be a master pizza-thrower! In the winter, when I’m not inclined to stand out in the cold and grill, I throw my Naan either into my cast iron grill pan or a skillet. How simple is that?
