How many times have you wanted to make a deliciously crusty treat, only to find you’re out of breadcrumbs! Instead of putting the recipe aside for another day, try one of these quick & easy options to traditional breadcrumbs. In all cases, if your recipe calls for flavored breadcrumbs you can simply add whatever herbs are necessary.
- Save stale bread, buns and dinner rolls in the freezer. When you need breadcrumbs, simply process the frozen bread in a food processor. Or, if you don’t have a food processor you can grate them on a standard box grater on the fine grate side. Spread in a thin layer on a sheet pan, and toast at 275* in the oven for 15-20 minutes. If you’re using for a coating, consider adding a very light coating of melted butter; toss and toast.
- Crush saltine crackers in a zip bag to fine crumbs, and incorporate into your recipe. If you’re using for a coating, consider adding a very light coating of melted butter; toss and toast at 275* for 15-20 minutes.
- Crush Butter Crackers – Ritz or Townhouse Crackers for example – in a zip bag. They’re delicious both incorporated into recipes or as coating.
- Crush Corn Flakes, Chex Corn Cereal, or Rice Krispie Cereal! Pour into a zip bag and smash by hand or use a rolling pin. This is an amazing coating for baked chicken – just add 2 T of Hidden Valley Ranch dry dip mix and 3 T of grated parmesan cheese to your crushed corn flakes. Roll chicken pieces in melted butter, coat with corn flake mix, and bake.
- Keebler Townhouse Focaccia Crackers – again…AMAZING! And, you can get in several flavors.
O.k….bonus…because this is something we ALWAYS have in the house for my husband, the potato chip connoisseur….Crush Potato Chips – again, a bunch of different flavors.
Have you ever used any of these options? Do you have others you use in a pinch? I’d love to hear…then I’ll add to my pantry stash! Happy crushing, y’all!
